WHY WE MADE THIS

To apply a new lens to team and organizational improvement that empowers teams to improve what's in their control and highlight the systemic trends that require collective action and escalation.

This balance between alignment v. autonomy applies to every team and is context-dependent, so it scales beyond technology and product teams and can be run across an entire organization.

FACILITATOR LEVEL

Intermediate - Advanced

HOW TO USE THE alignment v. autonomy MATRIX

N.B. It's an intentionally open question, so ask everyone to 'go with their gut' and answer each question within 30 seconds.

The questions are:

  1. where you ARE NOW; &

  2. WHERE you want this team to be.

As a facilitator, give everyone the chance to explain their answers. Then go on to discuss their answer to the direction they want to go on. Why did they answer the way they did, and if the conversation has changed their answer? From here, the next question is - how could each area be improved, so autonomy and alignment?

Then, the conversation will fall into the 'solution box' at the bottom of the board as you create actions and the next steps.

NICE TO HAVE

To level this up, there might be value in scaling this across multiple teams and seeing what

  1. direction everyone wants to move in and

  2. if there is consensus or any team-wide trends.

If so, this creates a strong image to relay to senior leadership. To start a conversation with a data-driven starting point.
